How We Source, Verify, and Correct
We ask the county to be transparent, so we hold ourselves to the same standard. Here is how we work, who funds us, and how to tell us when we get something wrong.
Primary documents first
Wherever we can, we publish the government’s own records — contracts, audit logs, policies, and correspondence — unaltered, so you never have to take our word for it. When we describe a number, we link to the document it comes from. Our records hub mirrors these to the Internet Archive so they can’t quietly disappear.
We separate fact from argument
We distinguish what the records prove from what we argue. Verified facts are sourced. Legal questions — like whether warrantless ALPR tracking violates the Fourth Amendment — are framed as open and contested, because they are. This site is run by a licensed North Carolina attorney, but nothing here is legal advice; it is general information for public discussion. For advice about your situation, consult a lawyer.
Accuracy and fairness
We verify before we publish, and we try to characterize others’ positions — including the Sheriff’s Office and Flock Safety — accurately, even where we disagree. Every criminal matter we describe is an allegation unless and until proven; individuals are presumed innocent. Where a figure is a range or an estimate, we say so and explain why.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix it, and we say what changed. Substantive corrections are noted with a dated update on the page itself rather than erased. If you spot an error — a wrong number, a misread document, a broken link — email Mark@DeFlockILM.org and we will review it promptly. We would rather be corrected than be wrong.
Independence and funding
DeFlockILM is a volunteer, citizen-led, nonpartisan effort. We take no donations and sell nothing. We are not affiliated with Flock Safety, with any government agency, or with the volunteer-run DeFlock mapping project (we use and credit its public map). The framing stays on the Fourth Amendment, cost, and government overreach — never left versus right.
Privacy — even here
We hold the county to a transparency standard, so we hold ourselves to a privacy one. This site runs no Google, Facebook, or advertising trackers; our only analytics is a cookieless visit count. When you add your email for meeting reminders, it is never sold or shared, and you can unsubscribe in one click.
